Cleanroom Face Masks and How to Wear One
A cleanroom environment is extremely sensitive to contamination. Despite all precautions taken to ensure its integrity, the only threat of contamination comes from the outside world—which is why outside contaminants must be kept to an absolute minimum.
One of the most important ways to reduce contamination is through strict staff protocols. Individuals entering a cleanroom must be sanitized to avoid both particulate and biological contamination.
This is achieved by multiple strategies, such as wearing sterilized suits and shoes, and—most importantly—cleanroom face masks.
What are Cleanroom Facemasks?
Cleanroom face masks are specially designed to cover the mouth and nose, protecting both the wearer and the environment by ensuring sterility.
Unlike average surgical masks, cleanroom face masks undergo stricter testing. Their construction and packaging are carefully managed to produce a lint-free, sterile product that’s ideal for contamination-sensitive environments.
How to Wear a Cleanroom Face Mask
Wearing the mask properly is just as important as the mask itself. Here’s how to ensure optimal protection:
- Before Putting the Face Mask On: Even though the mask is sterile, your hands likely aren’t. Wash your hands using antibacterial soap or sanitize with alcohol solution (if trained properly).

- Sealing the Mask: Ensure there are no gaps. Depending on the mask style, this may involve pressing the edges around your face for a tighter seal.
- Breathing with the Mask: Once sealed, breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth to reduce moisture buildup and maintain mask integrity.
