Step 1: Perform Hand Hygiene

Use an alcohol-based (≥ 60%) hand sanitizer for 20 seconds or wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

Step 4: Don First Pair of Gloves

  • Choose a darker color glove for the first layer and a lighter glove on top to help identify a break or tear.
  • If available, select a longer glove style first to help cover the gown cuff and aid removal.
  • Inspect for any pinholes, tears, or defects.

Place glove over hands and extend gloves over the gown cuff to cover the wrist and limit exposure.

Step 5: Don Second Pair of gloves

  • Inspect the lighter colored top glove for pinholes, tears, or defects.
  • If possible, use one size larger to aid donning.
  • Leave the second glove cuff higher to make removal easier.

Doffing Two Pairs of Exam Gloves in Sequence with PPE

Step 1: Remove Left Glove

  • Use your right hand to remove the left glove.
  • Grab the overglove by pinching near the palm of the hand.
  • Pull the glove down and off the fingers.
  • Hold the left glove in the fist of your right hand and form it into a ball.

Step 2: Remove Right Glove

  • Use your left hand to remove the right glove.
  • Grab the overglove by pinching near the palm of the hand.
  • Pull the glove down and off the fingers, turning the gloves inside out.

Step 3: Discard the First Pair of Gloves

  • Use an alcohol-based (≥ 60%) hand sanitizer for 20 seconds or wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

*Recommended to disinfect between glove removal to limit cross-contamination.

Step 5: Remove Left Underglove

  • Use your right hand to remove the left glove.
  • Grab the underglove by pinching near the palm of the hand.
  • Pull the glove down and off the fingers.
  • Hold the left glove in the fist of your right hand and form it into a ball.

Step 6: Remove Right Underglove

  • With your left hand, reach for the right wrist.
  • With two fingers from your left hand, insert UNDER the right glove cuff.
  • Pull the glove down and off the fingers, turning the gloves inside out.

Step 7: Discard Gloves

Step 8: Perform Hand Hygiene

  • Use an alcohol-based (≥ 60%) hand sanitizer for 20 seconds or wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

Step 9: Removal of Gown

  • Untie the back of the gown and unsnap the neck collar from behind.
  • Carefully pull the gown down and away from your body, then grab INSIDE the gown.
  • Roll the gown down.
  • Discard it in a sealed trash receptacle.

Step 10: Perform Hand Hygiene

  • Use an alcohol-based (≥ 60%) hand sanitizer for 20 seconds or wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

Step 11: Remove Eye Protection

Discard eye protection as per policy.

Step 12: Remove Mask/Respirator

Discard mask/respirator per policy.

Step 13: Perform Hand Hygiene

  • Use an alcohol-based (≥ 60%) hand sanitizer for 20 seconds or wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
